Uniquely Qualified: Personal Injury Lawyer Roger R. Foisy’s Medical Diplomas and Certificates

By Roger Foisy on March 10th, 2016

As a personal injury and long-term disability lawyer, I work with clients who have sustained a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. The more knowledgeable I am concerning medical topics and the human body, the better I am able to ensure my clients receive a fair settlement – one they truly deserve based on their specific injury or illness.

I am constantly striving to expand my areas of expertise and improve myself as a lawyer, so I can be in the best position possible to fight for my clients. I believe it is Personal Injury Lawyerimperative for a lawyer to continually update their skills.

To that end, I would like to share some of the diplomas and certificates I have recently earned:

Brain Injury Experience

One of my personal injury areas of concentration is brain injury, and I have put a great deal of time and effort into developing real knowledge on this
often-overlooked injury.

  • Children and Youth with Acquired Brain Injury, Level One
Brock University and the Ontario Brain Injury Association

This program covered information about behaviours after acquired brain injury that can affect a child’s learning and community participation, including: characteristics that impact classroom learning and behaviour, methods for assessing, education on treatment and social challenges from a functional perspective, and more.

  • Neurorehabilitation: Assisting Recovery and Function in Everyday Life Following Brain Injury, Level One
Brock University and the Ontario Brain Injury Association

This program provided a wide range of information, strategies, and techniques to better support people with acquired brain injury, including topics such as facilitation of cognitive function in everyday life, behavioural challenges, risk management and more.

  • Neuropsychological Assessments, Level Two
Brock University and the Ontario Brain Injury Association

This program presented detailed information about the approaches and tools used in neurological assessments in order to understand the extent and impact of specific brain injuries, and how to use these assessments to improve everyday life.

  • Advanced Rehabilitation for Persons With Acquired Brain Injury, Level Two
Brock University and the Ontario Brain Injury Association

This program covered brain injury across the lifespan, its impact on emotional dysregulation, and the factors of brain injury that cause rehabilitation to be more challenging.

  • 2015: Traumatic Brain Injury Conference
    UHN Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

The 2015 TBI Conference featured speaker Kevin Pearce, a former professional snowboarder who suffered a severe TBI in December 2009 while training for the Olympic trials.

  • 2016: Traumatic Brain Injury Conference
    UHN Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

Many TBI experts conducted talks and workshops at the 2016 TBI Conference, covering topics from concussion awareness and care strategies, to lessons from the toughest TBI cases and strategies to handle them.

  • Heads Up! Concussion in Youth Sports
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Heads Up is a free online course intended to teach adults (coaches, parents, etc.) about sports-related concussions, how to recognize them, and how to respond. It takes less than a couple of hours to complete, but the knowledge is invaluable. I highly recommend this course, now called “HEADS UP to Youth Sports”.

Medical School for Lawyers Program

I have received a diploma in a program called “Medical School for Lawyers” from the Pennsylvania Bar Institute. As part of this program I took various courses, some of which included:

  • Medical School for Lawyers – Into the Anatomy Lab
  • The Catastrophic Injury Case: Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, and Spinal Injury Cases
  • Traumatic Brain Injury: Understanding the Medical and Legal Aspects of Brain Injury Litigation
  • Diagnostic Medicine: A Lawyer’s Guide to How Diagnoses Are Made

Executive Certificate in Conflict Management

Since 2015, I have been working towards the completion of the University of Windsor’s Executive Certificate in Conflict Management. This program has allowed me to hone my skills in negotiation, conflict management, and mediation. To date I have completed the following courses:

  • Dealing with Difficult People Workshop
  • Negotiation Course
  • Difficult Conversation Course
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution Workshop

These courses involve a combination of lectures, demonstrations, videos, and coached case studies, as well as group discussions and exercises to ensure participants emerge with immediately applicable, practical skills. With this certificate, professionals improve their techniques and strategies for engaging in difficult conversations, dealing with difficult people, and successfully navigating difficult situations.

Conflict management and mediation is a crucial competency for me, whether I am encountering a strongly opposing prosecution or a client who is stressed and suffering from chronic pain.

Chronic Pain and Disability

  • Progressive Goal Attainment Program
University Centre for Research on Pain and Disability

I pride myself on assisting my clients with their rehabilitation goals, including those related to their workplace, home, or reintegration into the community.

PGAP is treatment program to help reduce disability associated with depression, pain, cancer, and other chronic conditions. This evidence-based program targets psychosocial risk factors for disability as points of intervention to complement existing clinical services.
